I believe NSIs have a great data story to tell in this modern age of AI. It’s a story of quality data products that one can rely on. However, it requires building trust, having a (business) plan and coming together. The barriers to starting collaborations on data in the public sector and getting the private sector to work with NSIs are different around the world. But there are visions that we can build on to make cross-border data a reality.

How to define data-based services, what is expected from the NSIs in addition to official statistics? Where are we at this stage, where are we going to and where we can draw the lines of official statistics (are there new frontiers)?

Moderator: Geir Axelsen, Director General of Statistics Norway
The session will interactively engage the audience and give floor for discussion. The discussion will address new data services that align with stakeholders needs and emerging trends; new and effective channels for interactions with users of new data services; European coordination for the provision of high-quality data services, etc. A key question will be - how to strategically manage the balance between enhancing the NSI’s portfolio of auxiliary services and the core mission of providing official statistics?

The groups are invited to discuss the opportunities and challenges of each of these aspects. The discussions will build up around the following guiding questions: Which new opportunities (positive impact) emerge for the NSIs from the diversification of their product and service portfolio? What are the challenges involved with the emerging data-driven services? What can we do to overcome these challenges? Which resources, competencies are needed?
